Domestic Airlines that make it possible

Traveling with pets isn’t just about the destination — it’s about making sure your four-legged friend feels safe and comfortable along the way. From picking the right airline to preparing your pet for the journey, a little homework goes a long way.

Here’s the tricky part: not ALL airlines treat pets the same way!

Choosing the right airline can make all the difference between a stressful journey and a smooth one for both you and your furry co-traveller.

Cabin vs. Cargo: What You Need to Know

Most airlines follow a simple rule: Small pets (under 7–10 kg including carrier) can travel in the cabin with you, while heavier pets usually go in the cargo hold. While cargo may sound intimidating (and it is for your pet!), many airlines now have specialized pet-handling services to make it safer and more comfortable. Our advice would be to find a trusted relocating or pet-handling vendor , speak to a few pet parents to understand their experience and then take an informed decision. After all, the safety of your pet matters most!

Pet-Friendly Airlines (and their Rules):

Air India

  • Pets up to 7 kg (carrier included) are allowed in-cabin

  • Larger pets can travel as checked baggage or cargo

  • Health certificates and vaccination proof are mandatory

Akasa Air

  • One of India’s most pet-inclusive airlines

  • Pets over 3 months old are welcome, with a 10 kg in-cabin allowance and dedicated slots for two pets per flight

Tips for a Smooth Flight :

  • Vet check & documents: Most airlines require a health certificate issued within 72 hours of travel.

  • Crate training: Introduce the carrier early so it feels like home, not a trap.

  • Tire them out: A long play session before the flight often means a peaceful nap onboard.

  • Comfort kit: Bring a favourite toy, blanket, or chew to ease stress.

  • Hydration hack: Freeze water in the bowl so it melts gradually during the flight.

Know the rules: Some breeds (like snub-nosed dogs) face special travel restrictions.

Pet No Fret Takeaway

Airlines like Air India and Akasa Air are making pet travel less stressful and more accessible for parents who want their fur babies by their side. We hope that airlines in India, like many international airlines, become more tolerant of different sized pets. A 35 kg dog can be equally well trained to travel on an airline, in-cabin with their pet parent.

With the right preparation, research and patience - flying with pets can be a positive experience for both of you.

NOTE: Always double-check the airline’s official website for the latest updates - rules, weight limits, and paperwork can change, and you don’t want last-minute surprises.

At the end of the day, the best trips are the ones where your pet feels as comfortable in the skies as they do at home.
